Do you keep all the books you every buy? Just the ones you love? Just collectibles? What do you do with the ones you don't want to keep?

I do have quite a collection of books but they're mostly books I want to read, not ones I have read. I don't keep very many of my books. If I like a book enough that I know I will re-read it, or if it's one of my all-time favorites, I definitely will keep it.

The books I don't want to keep I take to a local used bookstore. They take used books in trade for store credit so I take bags of books there and use my in-store credit to buy more books! It's really a win-win situation for all involved. :)

It's Monday! It wasn't. It's a typical memoir written by a celebrity, so of course it's not going to be well written. But it was enjoyable, mostly because I just love Chef Ramsay! I recently started watching Kitchen Nightmares and reruns of Hell's Kitchen and wanted to know more about the man. If you're a fan of Chef Ramsay, I would recommend this. Otherwise, you're probably not going to enjoy it, sorry to say.

Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim - David Sedaris

Another one I wasn't quite impressed with. My relationship with David Sedaris' writing is kind of touch and go - some of his pieces are absolutely hilarious while others simply fall flat. This is a mix of both, almost most of them were, to put it simply, just boring.

Currently Reading ...

I just today started reading The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. I've read so many good reviews of this book so I wanted to give it a try. It got off to a semi-slow start but it's picking up. Neil Gaiman has a great writing style. I've heard him speak before, and I think his voice and accent are beautiful, so I am kind of reading it with his voice in my head (if that makes sense!) and that's making it even better!

Before that, I finished: New Moon, by Stephenie Meyer. It was a lot better than Twilight (which I did enjoy) and I'm really looking forward not only to reading the next in the series but also seeing the movie. ('Cause I think that Taylor Lautner is a cutie patootie!)

Next Up: Continuing the Twilight series with Eclipse...

Teaser Tuesdays

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

Grab your current read

Open to a random page

Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Here's this week's teaser:

"Tristran Thorn, at the age of seventeen, and only six months older than Victoria, was half the way between a boy and a man, and was equally uncomfortable in either role; he seemed to be composed chiefly of elbows and Adam's apples. His hair was the brown of sodden straw, and it stuck out at awkward, seventeen-year-old angles, wet and comb it howsoever much he tried."

From Stardust by Neil Gaiman

It's Monday! Do they live with your own collection, or do you keep separate? Do you monitor them in any way?

I generally don't borrow books from friends, mostly because I have so many books of my own in my to-be-read list that I know I probably won't get to theirs for a while and I wouldn't want to keep them waiting for their books.

As for library books, I do get many, many of them, and they go in a pile separate from my other books. My own books are stacked up in bookshelves in my living room; my library books live in a pile on my desk in my living room. I even try to keep them in order of due date so I can at least try to get them read before they have to go back. It almost never happens, but I try!

Friday Fill-Ins #160

Friday Fill-Ins is hosted here.

1. The author that, so far as you’re concerned, everyone should be reading–but that nobody seems to have heard of. You know, not JK Rowling, not Jane Austen, not Hemingway–everybody’s heard of them. The author that you think should be that famous and can’t understand why they’re not.

Without a doubt, I would have to say Christopher Moore. I LOOOOVVVEE this guy's books, and even the people I know who read almost as much as I do haven't ever heard of him. His books (especially Lamb) are clever, funny, smart, and just great reads. Is it ever appropriate?

This is a great question! I'm sure the answer would be vastly different if you asked a non-reader, but as a reading junkie, I have to say that, while it can be inappropriate to read in front of others, I still do it! I feel that it's absolutely fine to read while in a waiting room, if you're eating alone at a restaurant, or even if you're hanging out with a friend - in certain circumstances. I have a friend / co-worker who reads just as much as I do, and when the weather is nice, we go outside during our lunch hour and sit and read together. I think it's okay as long as you're not being anti-social, or rude, and if the person with whom you're sitting is okay with it. I even read while spending time with my boyfriend! He's a big sports fan, and when he turns on the hockey game or soccer match, I open my book. He doesn't mind, and it's actually the most peaceful reading time I have, because I'm with the person whose company I enjoy the most, doing the activity I most enjoy.

Friday Firsts

Friday Firsts is hosted at Well Read Reviews.

The first line can make or break a reader’s interest. Just how well did the author pull you in to the story with their first sentence? To participate in this weekly book meme is extremely easy.

Grab the book you are currently reading and open to the first page.

Write down the first sentence in the first paragraph.

Create a blog post with this information. (Make sure to include the title & author of the book you are using. Even an ISBN helps!)

Did this first sentence help draw you into the story? Why or why not?

This is from my current read, In the Woods by Tana French (really good, by the way!)

"Picture a summer stolen whole from some coming-of-age film set in small-town 1950s."

It's a good first sentence, and does set up the basic premise of the story, although it is a bit misleading, given the rest of the plot. It didn't exactly prepare me for what was coming!

Library Loot: Week of January 10, 2010

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Eva and Marg that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library.

These books found their way into my home this week. But grammar and arithmetic move to the back burner this holiday season with the sudden arrivals of substitute teacher Madame Frechette, straight from Quebec, and feisty Russian student Zhenya Kabakova. While Felix learns the meaning of French kissing, cultural misunderstanding, and tableaux vivants, Wishin' and Hopin' barrels toward one outrageous Christmas.

From the Funicello family's bus-station lunch counter to the elementary school playground (with an uproarious stop at the Pillsbury Bake-Off), Wishin' and Hopin' is a vivid slice of 1960s life, a wise and witty holiday tale that celebrates where we've been - and how far we've come.

First line: The year I was a fifth-grade student at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parochial School, our teacher, Sister Dymphna, had a nervous breakdown in front of our class.

My thoughts: This was a cute little book, a quick read ... that unfortunately wasn't that great. It was good, but it wasn't Wally Lamb good (anyone who has read and loved his previous works should know what I mean by that). I absolutely adored She's Come Undone and I Know This Much is True and was just a little disappointed by Wishin' and Hopin'. It wasn't nearly the same quality of story - but it was worth the read, so give it a try.

Booking Through Thursday

Booking Through Thursday is found at http://btt2.wordpress.com/

It's the last day of the year, and you know what that means ... nostalgia and looking back.

What were your favorite books of the year? (Books that were new to you in 2009, if not necessarily published this year.)

I read quite a few great books this year and it was hard to pick out my favorites but I managed to! Out of the 77 books I read this year, my top 15 (because I couldn't possibly pick 10!) were, in no particular order:

1) Empire Falls - Richard Russo
2) The Adoration of Jenna Fox - Mary E. Pearson
3) The 19th Wife - David Ebershoff
4) Night - Elie Wiesel
5) Angry Conversations with God - Susan E. Isaacs
6) Inkheart - Cornelia Funke
7) North of Beautiful - Justina Chen Headley
8) The Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield
9) The Book of Ruth - Jane Hamilton - a re-read for about the fifth time
10) Once was Lost - Sara Zarr
11) Geektastic - edited by Holly Black
12) Her Fearful Symmetry - Audrey Niffenegger
13) The Magicians - Lev Grossman
14) The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins - OMG! As good as everyone said it was!
15) Generation Dead - Daniel Waters

Review: Generation Dead / Daniel Waters

Title/Author: Generation Dead / Daniel Waters
Format / Pages: Hardback / 392 pages
Publisher: Hyperion
ISBN: 978-142310921-1
Genre: Young Adult
Source: Library

From the book jacket: All over the country, a strange phenomenon is occurring. Some teenagers who die aren't staying dead. They are coming back to life, but they are no longer the same. Termed "living impaired" or "differently biotic", they are doing their best to blend into society again.

But the kids at Oakvale High don't want to take classes or eat in the cafeteria next to someone who isn't breathing. And there are no laws to protect the differently biotic from the people who want them to disappear - for good.

With her pale skin and goth wardrobe, Phoebe Kendall has never run with the popular crowd. But no one can believe it when she falls for Tommy Williams, the leader of the dead kids: not her best friend, Margi, and especially not her neighbor Adam, the star of the football team. Adam has realized that his feelings for Phoebe run much deeper than just friendship. He would do anything for her - but what if protecting Tommy is the one thing that would make her happy?

First line: Phoebe and her friends held their breath as the dead girl in the plaid skirt walked past their table in the lunchroom.

My thoughts: Let me first say, they did not make books like this when I was growing up! While there were some very good young adult books when I was a teenager (back in the 90s!) the quality of young adult books has grown so much in the past few years - and this book is no exception.

Waters' first book is smart and funny, thought-provoking, and relevant to the problems teenagers face - although, admittedly, I don't think zombie-ism is running rampant right now. This fabulous book really held my attention. I couldn't put it down and when I turned the last page, the next thing I did was go right to my local library's website and put the next book in the series on hold. I can't wait to find out what happens next.

Friday Finds

I'm a little late but here goes anyway!

What great books did you hear about this week? Before I found Nirvana, my musical tastes ranged only as far as New Kids on the Block and Paula Abdul. I don't remember when I first heart them - probably when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out - but I remember my musical tastes subsequently being transformed.

I remember watching the vigil held after his death and hearing Courtney speak and cry and wail and read Kurt's suicide note. I remember Rolling Stone published some of the note. It really affected me at the time - as it did many other kids my age. So many teenagers were absolutely devastated by his death. It's a sad story. He really was, or could have been, an amazing man. He was, no doubt, a lyrical genius who inspired many, many people.

This book was an extremely interesting read. The author delves into the psychology behind Cobain's oddities and freakishness - because, let's face it, he was a pretty weird dude, even before he began abusing drugs. The book delves into Cobain's childhood, friendships, girlfriends, but hits the heart of the matter when he meets the Great Train Wreck, Courtney Love. The book shows Courtney's "human" side. We all simply see her as a big hot mess but she really was a driving force behind his life. Many people thought of her as Nirvana's "Yoko Ono" and thought she was the one who started Kurt heavily into drugs, but the truth is, he was using long before he met her. She did her best by him, and their love for one another - and their daughter, Frances Bean - clearly shines through.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://quitethehuman.blogspot.com/2008/10/review-heavier-than-heaven-charles-r.html' title='Review: Heavier Than Heaven (Charles R. Genre? Non-fiction, memoir.

What led you to pick up this book? I love the Dog! Back when I had cable, I watched his show all the time. Plus, I love biographies and memoirs.

Plot summary:Duane Chapman, aka Dog the Bounty Hunter, has had an amazing life. He had a troubled and trying upbringing, which led to an early life of crime, including numerous arrests for armed robbery and a murder conviction. While Dog claims to be innocent of the murder rap, he maintains that the 5 years he served for the crime changed his life. With a newfound respect for the law, Dog vowed to become a force for change and good. This inspired him to pursue a career in bounty hunting. Dog is now the owner of Da Kine Bail Bonds in Honolulu and self-proclaimed Greatest Bounty Hunter in the World. Six thousand-plus captures over the past two decades have earned this highly intense, charismatic ex-con and born-again Christian such a distinction. He is also a devoted father of 12-and some of his older children work with him as bounty hunters, along with his equally charismatic new wife Beth. In YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN'T HIDE, Dog details all this and more, giving his legion of fans all the details they've been waiting for.

What did you like most about the book? I liked reading about how Dog got started bounty hunting. It doesn't seem to be a career one chooses - it's more of a "I just fell into it" kind of thing.

What did you like least? Dog - no surprise - has a bit of an ego and that shows in his words.

Do you recommend this book? If you are a fan of the Dog, by all means, read it. Genre? Fiction, Young Adult.

What led you to pick up this book? I was browsing the young adult section in the library and it sounded very interesting.

Plot summary:

Mercy O'Connor is becoming an angel.

She can feel her wings sprouting from her shoulder blades. They itch. Sometimes she even hears them rustling.

And angels don't need to eat. So Mercy has decided she doesn't need to either. She is not sick, doesn't suffer from anorexia, is not trying to kill herself. She is an angel, and angels simply don't need food.

When her parents send her to an eating disorder clinic, Mercy is scared and confused. She isn't like the other girls who are so obviously sick. If people could just see her wings, they would know. But her wings don't come and Mercy begins to have doubts. What if she isn't really an angel? What if she's just a girl? What if she is killing herself? Can she stop?

What did you like most about the book? I really liked Mercy, the main character. Instead of coming off as simply crazy or stupid, she was a really engaging character. I also like the suspense of it - I couldn't wait to find out if she was just imagining the wings or if it was really happening.

What did you like least? The story turned a little ... mystical, maybe, is the right word? ... toward the end and didn't read as smoothly. It didn't really match the beginning of the story.

What did you think of the writing style? It was a very quick, and extremely interesting read, for the most part.

Have you read any other books by this author? No, I haven't, but I'd like to.
What did you think of the ending? It wasn't what I expected.

Do you recommend this book? If you use a rating system, what’s your rating? I would recommend it, absolutely.

Quote of the Day

Elizabeth is smart, ruthless, and emotionally damaged ... It's a little outdated at this point because it was published in 1998, so she references headline news of that time period, like Amy Fisher and Nicole Brown Simpson - both of whom have entire chapters devoted to them.

Wurtzel takes on the idea of women and how the world views them as opposed to how it views men. I found most of her writing interesting but not particularly insightful or shocking. It's not news to me that women are generally paid less than men. It's not news to me that the public views a mother's role differently they they do a father's role. But it was still an interesting read.

The one thing that really bothered me about the book was that Wurtzel basically let Amy Fisher off the hook for shooting Mary Jo Buttafuoco. She goes on and on about how Amy was only seventeen years old at the time she met Joey and was a young, impressionable girl only looking for love and was just happy to have found someone who would pay attention to her. Granted, he did coerce into a life of prostitution and talked her into shooting Mary Jo but Amy was the one who picked up the gun and was one old enough to know that a bullet into someone's head could possibly cause some damage, possibly even death. Amy does deserve a little leeway because of the situations she was put into by Joey but Wurtzel gives her a little too much slack.
